Frequently Asked Questions

What is JC/LISD Academy?

JC/LISD Academy is a public middle college program for capable and self-motivated students, located on the campuses LISD TECH Center and Jackson College. JC/LISD Academy exists in partnership with all 11 Lenawee County public school districts and is funded through a percentage of each district's Foundation Allowance. This alleviates cost to students or their families for attending.

The Academy is designed to fully immerse high school aged students in the post-secondary learning environment, while affording them the opportunity to complete a high school diploma and associates degree in 5 years through the Michigan Department of Education’s Four Plus One Program.

The program gives students an opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school and offers motivated, academically-focused students a chance to enroll in advanced, college-level coursework. It also provides an alternative option for capable students who are either struggling or do not feel connected to their local high school. JC/LISD Academy allows students to:

  • Graduate from high school with a diploma and up to 60 college credits.
  • Attend classes on a college campus with support.
  • Learn in a college environment that fosters maturity and academic growth.
  • Gain vital skills for college success.

Why should a student enroll in JC/LISD Academy?

Academy instructors are highly qualified as determined by No Child Left Behind in mathematics, science, social studies, and English. All JC courses are taught by JC faculty.

How long can a student stay in JC/LISD Academy?

JC/LISD Academy: A Regional Middle College is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a four plus one program. Students are generally allowed to stay for four years. Students can remain in the Academy a year beyond high school to complete the program requirements as needed.

Does JC/LISD Academy have discipline and attendance policies?

Yes. Students and parents will receive the policies as part of the enrollment/intake interview process.

What calendar does JC/LISD Academy follow?

The academy's calendar is closely aligned with JC's academic calendars.

Can I participate in traditional sports and drama in my resident school district?

Yes, as long as your home school allows. However, you will be responsible to arrange your schedule and provide for your transportation.

Can I start taking college classes right away?

The Academy allows you to accelerate through the program based on skill acquisition, not credit accumulation. Your progress is based on your customized academic and career pathway.

What isn't provided for me?

Transportation is not provided to students. You and your parents are encouraged to consider private transportation, car-pooling, or public transportation.

Can special education students enroll?

Yes! Additionally, special education students who join the Academy work directly with Jackson College’s office of Academic Support Services. Students are expected to learn how to monitor their own educational progress, advocate for their own learning needs, and successfully negotiate their way through the post-secondary environment. We believe that successful JC/LISD Academy students must be willing to take responsibility for their own effort, education and behavior.

How will I know if the program is the proper fit and what happens if it isn't?

It's up to you and your parents to decide if the program is right for you. Students who consistently make poor personal choices and/or require strong external controls to moderate their behavior are, in general, not successful in programs of this type. You're required to learn and consistently demonstrate strong life management, emotional, social, and academic skills prior to transitioning to, and enrolling in, college-level coursework.

After a reasonable period of time, if you and your parents decide JC/LISD Academy is not the right fit, you can "opt out" of the program. We will work with you, your family and your resident district to facilitate this process.
